Ubuntu 10.10: The Perfect 10

Its been just about 6 months since the release of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Long Term Support) and we have been eagerly waiting for Ubuntu 10.10 since the release schedule announcement. We have witnessed a lot of changes since Alpha1 release of 10.10. Canonical promised it to be the Perfect 10/10 and now we can say that they have done it and they have done it well. We are really glad to announce the release Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat.

The new release is here with a big list of new features like the Linux kernel 2.6.35-22.33 ,  Gnome 2.32, KDE 4.5.1 and much more.

What’s New :- We have been wondering from where to start because this release has witnessed a lot of changes.

Let’s start it with Ubuntu 10.10 Installer >

-On boot Ubiquity will offer you the option of running the live system or installing directly.

-The installer now lets you download updates and restricted packages such as MP3 playback during the install so you don’t have to do them later.

-The installation starts after the disk setup page.

-The installation will continue when you will be asked to fill up your details like Time-Zones, Keyboard layout, Username/Password etc. making the installation process much faster.

Ubuntu 10.10: The Gnome Desktop >

Besides the new Linux kernel 2.6.35-22.33, here are some key features of Ubuntu 10.10:

-Gnome 2.32 makes the desktop look even better.

  • The boot process is cleaner and faster.
  • Radiance and Ambiance theme get an updated look.
  • New wallpapers have been added to the list.
  • New Ubuntu 10.10 default wallpaper: Warty Final, looks really awesome.

-Evolution mail updated to version 2.30.3.

-Shotwell replaced F-spot as default photo manager.

-The updated  Sound Indicator has Music player controls.

-Mozilla firefox 3.6.x comes by default.

-Ubuntu Software Center :

  • USC gets an updated look and feel.
  • For showcasing applications better, new “Featured” and “What’s New” have been added.
  • It contains an improved package description view.
  • Package installation history is also available.

-Ubuntu One also includes some really cool features like

  • Polished desktop integration with new sign up and sign in process.
  • Tighter integration with Ubuntu SSO.
  • Nautilus enhancements for managing folder sync preferences.
  • Faster file sync speed. Share links to music within the Ubuntu One Music Store.

-Gwibber has been updated to support the recent change in Twitter’s
authentication system.

-Ubiquity : The new Ubuntu installer works faster than ever.

Kubuntu 10.10 : KDE 4.5.1 lock & load>

-KDE 4.5.1 is ready to use.

-Rekonq, the new default browser for KDE based on Qt Webkit.

-Plasma Netbook now sports the Global Menu by default.

-Pulseaudio is the default sound server.

-KDE Platform, Workspaces, and Applications have been updated to 4.5.1.

-Kubuntu now comes with Qt 4.7.

-KPackageKit updates bring a faster backend and an updated UI that provides an application focused view.

-Bluedevil has become the default bluetooth stack.

-It merged the Desktop and Netbook images into one. Either Plasma Desktop or Plasma Netbook workspace will be started at login as best suits your computers. Users will be able to switch between the two in System Settings. Seems like a really good feature.

Ubuntu Installation:- The installation process is the same but now its more fun with the new Ubiquity installer (as stated above) which starts the installation right after the “Partitioner Setup” and rest of the settings can be done later while the installation is taking place.Fore details on the installation process of ubuntu, please refer our previous post.
